Icebreaker Product Review: 5 Must-Have Pieces for Every Outdoor Adventure

If you know me, you’ll know I love comfy clothes more than (almost!) anything in the world. I run cold, and it wouldn’t be unusual to find me wearing an icebreaker thermal post-sea swim in the middle of summer.

Living in New Zealand, where weather can switch from sweltering hot to chilling cold at the drop of a hat, finding the perfect clothing for outdoor adventures is a must. My expectations are high, and I find it difficult to part with my hard-earned money unless I know that the pieces I’m investing in are ones I will love forever. For me, Icebreaker ticks every box.

Disclosure: I have loved and worn Icebreaker products for over a decade. This year, I am partnering with Icebreaker to branch out and try some of their other products, including their innovative  ZoneKnit™ range with targeted thermoregulation. I feel exceptionally lucky to work with one of my favourite companies in the world. Although I have partnered with them, all reviews and opinions are my own. I pride myself in authenticity and transparency, and would never tell you to buy something I wouldn’t pay for myself.

Why I Love Icebreaker

Icebreaker is a New Zealand-based company specialising in performance wear made from ultra-high-quality Merino wool. They’ve set the standard for Merino wool products and are known for their cosy, lustrous, high-quality Merino wool that’s soft to the touch. I was first introduced to Icebreaker over a decade ago, and honestly, they’re one of the only brands I trust when it comes to my outdoor wardrobe.

As someone who loves the outdoors, I try to support responsible companies whenever possible. What I love about Icebreaker is that they don’t just care about creating high-performing clothing; they also do it responsibly. In 2018, Icebreaker introduced the Growers Club, a 10-year partnership with their wool growers to offer better security and enable them to care for their sheep while nurturing their entire ecosystem. Icebreaker grower’s commitment to animal welfare extends to their sheep and the sheep dogs working alongside them at the stations. They always have access to clean water and proper nutrition, are free to roam in open pastures and have adequate shade and shelter.

On top of that, Icebreaker is currently 96.14% plastic-free and are working towards their goal of being 100% plastic-free. Not only are their products hugely functional, but also stylish and can be worn day-to-day which is a huge win for my wardrobe! Their dedication to sustainbility makes their products functional, stylish and guilt-free. They’re well worth the investement.

What Is Merino and Why Is It So Expensive?

If you’ve looked at hiking packing lists, the “best clothes to take to New Zealand”, or are into the outdoors, chances are you’ve come across Merino wool. There are so many reasons why Merino wool is the ultimate choice for unbeatable performance, no matter the season. But it comes with a price tag! If this was your first thought when you saw the cost of Merino clothing, I wouldn’t blame you.

With today’s cost of living, it’s more important than ever that we’re only investing in products that are truly worth it and will stand the test of time. Merino wool has been historically expensive. A pair of midweight Icebreaker socks will set you back approximately $45 NZD, while a t-shirt can run you $100+ NZD.

So why is it so expensive?

Merino is an ultra-soft fabric known for its warmth, moisture-wicking, durability, and many more features. Icebreakers Merino wool products are grown by Merino sheep that graze on the South Island of New Zealand. These sheep have the softest and finest fleece imaginable and offer next-to-skin comfort.

Hot when cold and cold when hot

It can withstand temperatures ranging from -20 C° up to +35 C°. That means that not only is Merino wool the perfect choice for winter activities, but it will keep you cool in the summer months too.

It’s naturally thermo-regulating and breathable. When it’s warm, the fibres can absorb your moisture vapours and evaporate them outside of the fabric. But while it’s cool, these vapours condense inside the fibre, giving off heat and keeping you nice and warm.

The perfect choice for summer

It’s UV which is ideal for New Zealands harsh sun!

Odour resistent

No matter how long your day is. I travelled around Europe for 8 months during 2023 and can attest that a few days without a washing machine will not leave you feeling stinky and grimy. It sounds gross, but you can simply hang your baselayer up in the open air once you’ve worn it and wear it again the next day.

The fabric is washable (at a low temperature) and will not lose shape easily. Plus, there’s no need for a dryer – most Icebreaker products will fully dry within an hour!

Durable

I have had some of my Icebreaker Merino products for over a decade, and they still look as good as new! They’re tough-wearing and stand the test of time.

In my opinion, Merino wool is one of the most expensive products you can buy, but also the one that you should invest in, particularly if you love the outdoors, run cold, sweat a lot or want a bit of extra comfort.

What is Icebreaker ZoneKnit™?

When you think of Merino wool, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? If you’re like me, you’ve probably always considered it something that will keep you warm during chilly winter days. But merino wool isn’t just about warmth—it’s also my go-to option for staying cool, even during the blistering New Zealand summer.

These innovative layers have completely redefined what Merino wool can do. ZoneKnit™ offers targeted thermoregulation, bringing warmth, cooling, and ventilation to where your body needs it during high-intensity activities. The products are made from a variety of different Merino wool weights and fabtric structures, meaning that you get more breathability or warmth depending on the body part.

In short, ZoneKnit™ is specially engineered, body-mapped clothing designed to help you achieve peak comfort and athletic performance, no matter the weather.

Product reviews

Without further ado, let’s get into the nitty-gritty!

Women’s Merino 200 Oasis Crewe

The Women’s Merino 200 Oasis Crewe is one of the pieces in my wardrobe that I cannot imagine living without. It was my first introduction to Icebreaker in 2012, when I inherited my first baselayer from my Mum. She’d worn it for more than three years and lovingly parted with it for her “ever-cold” daughter.

In 2023, I finally treated myself to a second before my 8-month backpacking trip through Europe. They’re constantly rotating in my wardrobe and, without being too dramatic, surgically attached to my body during the winter months.

You’ll find them in my backpack on every single adventure, hiking or camping trip and are my go-to layering piece. There’s a reason it’s one of Icebreaker’s best-selling tops—it delivers every single time!

Why it’s worth the investment

There are so many different long-sleeved baselayers on the market. But, what sets the Oasis Crewe apart from its competitors is its 100% Merino wool design. Merino wool is like nature’s performance fabric. It’s soft against the skin, regulates temperature beautifully, and is (mostly) odour-free. It’s the kind of top that works as hard as you do, keeping you comfortable no matter the conditions.

How warm is it?

I think it’s worth noting that as I am always cold, I rely heavily on layers to get through winter. While I wouldn’t call the Merino 200 Oasis Crewe a standalone base layer for the middle of winter (at least not for how warm I want to be), it’s a layering superstar. It’s perfect under a fleece, jumper or down vest on frosty mornings or as a single layer in the shoulder seasons when the chill isn’t too much to bear.

Fit and design

The Merino 200 Oasis Crewe is slightly snug, slim-fitting, and tailored to move with you. It sits close to the body for maximum warmth, moisture management, and layering ability. It has a slightly longer hem than other baselayers I’ve tried. It’s perfect for tucking into jeans or hiking pants and leaves zero chance of skin exposure when you’re bending, climbing, or stretching. While I typically prefer shorter tops for a more “flattering” look, the practicality and comfort of this design have truly won me over. It’s true to size and feels like a lovely warm hug every time I put it on.

Durability

Icebreaker has nailed durability with this one. It still holds up beautifully despite owning my original top for over a decade. The flatlock seams are high-quality and designed to withstand serious wear and tear. I have one small hole in my original baselayer, which I created by snagging it on some gorse while hiking the Queen Charlotte Track. It was my own carelessness that caused the hole, but despite not being repaired (I really should get onto that!), it’s never gotten larger.

One of the most magical things about Merino wool is that it doesn’t hold onto odours, even after days of hiking or intense activity. I found that when you do finally wash the top, it has a 1-hour drying time, which is significantly longer than some of the other blended and polyester options on the market. However, I genuinely think this product is worth the wait! Icebreaker also backs their products with a one-year warranty, so you can invest confidently.

If you’re looking for a versatile, high-performing base layer that’ll see you through years of adventures, the Merino 200 Oasis Crewe is it.

125 ZoneKnit™ Energy Wind Short Sleeve T-Shirt

The 125 ZoneKnit™ Energy Wind Short Sleeve T-Shirt is a new product in my wardrobe,  designed for high-energy adventures like hiking, running or cycling. I can also see it being the perfect top for someone who sweats more than “usual” or is just looking for an ultra-comfortable t-shirt to wear every day.

Why it’s worth the investment

This shirt combines all of my favourite natural benefits of Merino wool with innovative ZoneKnit™ technology, which gives you the perfect balance of breathability and warmth. It’s lightweight yet durable, and although I haven’t worn it for as long as some of my other clothes, I can tell it’s worth the investment.

How does it perform?

The 125 ZoneKnit™ Energy Wind Short Sleeve T-Shirt uses engineered body-mapped technology to regulate your body temperature and let your skin breathe during high-intensity activity. What I love most is how it handles sweat. The strategically placed mesh panels provide excellent ventilation, while the Merino blend wicks moisture and prevents odour. After a long hike or a hot day outdoors, it still feels fresh, which I’ve found is PERFECT for avoiding that gross, sticky, post-exercise feeling. Plus, it’s wind-resistant, making it an excellent choice for breezy days when you want to wear a sports bra or light layer but need extra protection.

How does it fit?

I love the fit of this top. It’s athletic and slightly tailored, offering plenty of room to move without being too baggy. I like a slightly cropped top for aesthetics and was worried that this piece would be too long. But it’s perfect. It’s long enough to stay in place while hiking but short enough to look stylish with shorts, leggings or hiking pants.

I found the top to be true to size. I am a true-to-size NZ 8 (US 4) and wear a size S. As the shirt is designed for warm weather conditions, it’s a thinner material and, therefore, slightly seethrough. I thought that this would bother me, but it doesn’t in the slightest. I’ve paired the top with sports bras and Icebreaker’s own Siren Bra; you cannot see anything other than the outline of the bra.

Is it durable?

Although it hasn’t been in my wardrobe rotation as long as other Icebreaker products, I think this shirt is built to last, the fabric resists pilling, and the construction seems sturdy.  I’ve worn it 5+ times over the past month in the leadup up to this review and can say that it’s easy to care for, dries quickly (under 30 minutes) and doesn’t lose shape after being thrown in the wash.

For outdoor enthusiasts who demand more from their gear (like me!) this is a fab investment well worth your hard earned money.

125 ZoneKnit™ Energy Wind Long Sleeve T-Shirt

After loving the 125 ZoneKnit™ Energy Wind Short Sleeve T-Shirt, I knew I had to try the long-sleeve version. A product will not often skyrocket into my “wardrobe must-haves”, but in this instance, it did! This top has quickly become a go-to in my wardrobe, especially for the windy, chilly summer evenings we’re currently having in Auckland! I’ve even worn it during the day for a little extra sun protection.

The 125 ZoneKnit™ Energy Wind Long Sleeve T-Shirt shares all the features of the short-sleeve version, so I won’t go into the nitty-gritty design details again. However, the added benefit of long sleeves makes it even more versatile.

I’d highly recommend this one if you’re tossing between the short and long-sleeve options. It’s just as comfortable and breathable but with that extra layer of practicality, making it perfect for a wider range of conditions and activities.

Women’s Merino Hike+ Medium Crew Socks

If you can only purchase one thing from Icebreaker, PLEASE let it be their socks.

I would say that the Women’s Merino Hike+ Medium Crew Socks are the unsung heroes of my outdoor gear collection. However, I never shut up about them and have told all my friends to get out and beeline for them in the shops. I genuinely don’t believe that there are any other hiking socks worth investing in. These socks will set you back around $45 NZD, which seems like a lot of money, but if you’ve ever struggled with blisters or cold, uncomfortable feet on the trail, these socks will change your life.

Why they’re worth the investment

Merino wool’s natural moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating properties are a game-changer for socks. These keep your feet warm in the winter and cool in the summer, all while preventing that dreaded sweaty sock feel. Plus, they’re naturally odour-resistant, so your feet stay fresh even after a full day of hiking.

Are they comfortable?

In short, yes, yes, yes. The cushioning of these socks is just right. They’re not too bulky, don’t squeeze your toes, and have padding in all the right places to avoid chafing or pressure. They’re the only socks I’ve never had blisters with. I have hiked thousands of kilometres in New Zealand, Scotland, the Italian Dolomites, Madeira and even through the jungle in Vietnam.

Are they durable?

Again, a big fat YES. These socks are built to go the distance.  I purchased my first pair in 2013 before embarking on a 4 week school trip to Vietnam and Cambodia with World Challenge. I didn’t know what I had then (I must have been too young to appreciate a good thing when I saw it!) but I have never looked back.

Would you believe me if I told you I still own my first pair of Icebreaker hiking socks? Well, it’s true. They are in mint condition – no pilling, holes or maintenance is required. They must have been thrown in the wash 500+ times over the last decade and are still good as new. They hold up to repeated wear and washing without thinning out or losing their shape. Investing in quality socks like these is a no-brainer if you’re serious about hiking.

In short, the Merino Hike+ Medium Crew Socks are the kind of gear upgrade you didn’t know you needed but won’t want to live without once you’ve tried them.

Women’s Merino Blend 125 ZoneKnit™ Energy Wind Cropped Bra-Tank

I’ve saved one of the best for last. The Women’s Merino Blend 125 ZoneKnit™ Energy Wind Cropped Bra-Tank is the perfect combination of form and function. I love it for hiking, running, or doing Pilates which is a huge 2025 resolution for me!

Why it’s worth the investment

Again, I can’t reiterate enough that Merino wool might not be the first thing you think of for activewear, but it should be. I first wore this bra on a trip up Mount Mania in Whangārei Heads. It was on a hot, sunny day pre-Christmas 2024, and I was sick and tired of wearing my tried and true Lululemon Align Bra, only to have sweat dripping down my chest. TMI? Maybe. But we’ve all been there and I think it’s worth telling you that DIDN’T happen this time haha. Like the 125 ZoneKnit™ Energy Wind Short Sleeve T-Shirt, the 125 ZoneKnit™ Energy Wind Cropped Bra-Tank uses body-mapped technology to regulate your body temperature and was ultra comfortable.

Is it comfortable and supportive?

The cropped design offers medium support, making it ideal for low to moderate-impact activities like Pilates or hiking. The soft Merino blend feels amazing against the skin, and the wide straps distribute weight evenly without digging in. It’s supportive enough for workouts and stylish enough to wear with leggings or shorts. Again, it’s perfect for my versatility-loving wardrobe!

The bra band is tight and sits right on the skin. I have a small chest and find it provides enough support for what I use it for. However, if you are a B cup+, you may need extra support. I recommend going into your closest Icebreaker or Bivouac store to try the product and see if it’s right for you!

Is it durable?

Despite its lightweight feel, this bra tank feels incredibly durable. The seams are reinforced, and the fabric holds up to repeated washes without losing shape. The cups are removable, which I LOVE, so if you have a small chest, you could wear this piece as a tank top, or if you needed more support, you could always add in your own more supportive/padded cups if you feel so inclined. It’s the kind of piece you’ll reach for over and over again. I know I will.

My Final Thoughts: Is Icebreaker Worth Your Money?

Icebreaker continues to impress me with its commitment to quality, sustainability, and performance. While their pieces come with a high price tag, they’re an investment in comfort, durability, and versatility and are products you will love and wear forever.

If you’re an avid hiker, weekend adventurer, or just someone who values comfy, high-performing clothes, Icebreaker is a brand you can trust again and again. I know you’ll love them as much as I do.
